How to Scan a WiFi QR Code on iPhone & Android

Connect to wireless networks in seconds without typing passwords. Follow these simple steps for Apple iOS and Android devices.

Scanning on Apple iPhone & iPad (iOS 11+)

  1. Open the native Camera app: Swipe left on your Lock Screen or tap the Camera icon on your Home Screen.
  2. Point the rear camera steadily: Center the WiFi QR code in the frame. Do not press the shutter button.
  3. Look for the yellow notification: A yellow pill shaped banner reading Join "[Network Name]" Network will pop up over the code.
  4. Tap Join: Tap the banner, then tap Join in the system dialog. Your iPhone connects instantly.
Tip: If the yellow banner fails to appear, go to Settings > Camera and make sure Scan QR Codes is turned on.

Scanning on Android (Samsung, Pixel, Motorola)

Android devices running Android 10 or later feature multiple built-in scanning options:

Method A: Quick Settings Tile

Swipe down from the top of your screen to open Quick Settings. Tap Scan QR code (or 'QR code scanner'). Center the camera over the code and tap Connect to Network.

Method B: Camera / Google Lens

Open the standard Camera app or tap the Lens icon in the Google search bar. Aim at the code and tap the network badge that pops up on screen.

Troubleshooting: Why Isn't the Code Scanning?

1. Clean the Camera Lens

Fingerprint smudges on mobile lenses scatter light and blur barcode edges. Wipe your lens with a soft microfiber cloth or shirt.

2. Adjust Distance

Holding the phone too close (under 4 inches) prevents optical focus. Back up to 8–12 inches so the camera sensor snaps sharp focus.

3. Eliminate Glare & Reflections

If the QR code is inside a glossy photo frame or plastic table stand, tilt your phone slightly to dodge ceiling light glare.

4. Ensure Adequate Lighting

In dim restaurants or bedrooms, turn on your smartphone flashlight or use the built-in torch button inside the Quick Settings scanner.

Scanning WiFi QR Codes FAQs

Frequently asked questions about smartphone cameras, scanning compatibility, and troubleshooting.

Do I need to download a separate barcode scanner app to join WiFi?

No. Modern smartphones running iOS 11+ or Android 10+ include native QR barcode recognition inside their default camera apps. Installing third-party scanner apps is completely unnecessary and often introduces intrusive advertisements.

Why doesn't my iPhone camera recognize the WiFi QR code?

Ensure 'Scan QR Codes' is enabled in Settings > Camera. Also check that your lens is clean, the code is printed with sufficient contrast (dark ink on white paper), and you are holding the camera at least 6 inches away to allow auto-focus.

How do I scan a WiFi QR code on a Samsung Galaxy phone?

Swipe down twice from the top of your Samsung screen to access Quick Settings, then tap the 'Scan QR code' button. You can also open the Samsung Camera app and aim directly at the code.

Can I scan a WiFi QR code on a laptop or desktop computer?

Windows 11 and macOS do not natively connect to Wi-Fi via webcam barcode scanning by default. For laptop users, hosts should provide the SSID and password in plain text alongside the QR code.

What should I do if the prompt disappears before I can tap it?

Simply point the camera slightly away and then re-center it over the QR code to re-trigger the connection banner.
